IMHO this works on multiple levels. The USA has been a work in progress for a couple of centuries and what constitutes 'self-evident truth' has evolved (for the most part). Most critically for our current predicament is that a lot hasn't been spelled out. Open to interpretation. Dependent on the character of our leaders. Plus a fatal dependency on an outmoded notion of free will.
